Safex to farm gate: what do I get on the farm?
The Safex price of your grain less the deductions to your farm: Grain SA's total assumed deductions for your region and crop, or your own figures for your silo, transport and charges. The Safex figure is a dated snapshot, never a live price. Take the farm-gate price straight into the crop budget or break-even.

3. Deductions, R per ton
Workbook: Grain-SA-2026-27-Oos-Vrystaat-begroting-Eastern-Free-State-budget.xlsx, Pryse + Sensatiwiteitsanalise!D4; region Eastern Free State; effective 2026-09-04.
What it includes: One total from the Safex price to the "current product price on farm for best grade" (Grain SA's words). Grain SA does not say what it is made of.
Grain SA data of 2026-09-04, revision 2; updates: updated only after a new version is checked and approved; not automatic. A saved or shared scenario keeps its version.
Your figures (optional): they replace Grain SA's total
Enter every deduction you pay: as soon as one is filled, your figures replace Grain SA's whole total of R 406.25/t.
Deductions used: R 406.25/t (Grain SA total).
The answer
White maize Jul 2027 at R 4 074.80/t (snapshot of 2026-10-30), less Grain SA's assumed deductions of R 406.25/t, gives R 3 668.55/t on the farm: R 237.20/t below the price in Grain SA's budget.
| Safex Jul 2027 (2026-10-30) | R 4 074.80/t |
| Less Grain SA total assumed deductions | -R 406.25/t |
| Farm-gate price | R 3 668.55/t |
| Grain SA budget price (R 4 312 less R 406.25) | R 3 905.75/t |
| Difference | -R 237.20/t |
| Per hectare at 6.20 t/ha | R 22 745 |
Safex is a delivered futures price on a date, not a silo bid. A next-season contract is today's market price, not a forecast of the harvest price.

What you untick starts from Grain SA's figures in the other tool. Nothing personal goes along: farm figures only.
What this does not tell you
- Safex is a delivered futures price on a date, not a cash bid at your silo. The snapshot here is dated and timed; it is not a live price.
- Grain SA gives one total deduction per region and crop and does not say what it is made of; your own deductions replace it.
- A next-season contract is today's market price for that month, not a forecast of the harvest price.
- No price advice or hedging advice: speak to your broker, your co-operative or your adviser.
