Kroonstad is a town where people know each other. Your first month decides whether you become one of them. If you have just moved here, or are thinking of it, these are the places and habits that make you part of the town fastest.

The schools

Since 2021 Kroonstad's Afrikaans schools are Trio Primêr and Hoërskool Trio, formed from the old Rooiskool, Blouskool, Sentrale Volkskool and Kroonheuwel. The school is the town's biggest community: on the sideline on a Saturday you meet most people.

Saturday morning

The parkrun is every Saturday morning: five kilometres, free, and the fastest way to meet the town. After that, the banks of the Vals River and the Kroonpark resort are where families spend the weekend.

What goes on in town

VrystaatKroon is the local newspaper, with a Facebook page that carries every town story. Kroonstad won kykNET's Kwêla Town of the Year in 2022, and the Ignite & Revive festival brings churches, businesses and families together. The town is also home to the South African Jukskei Council.

The practical things

  • Register with the municipality for your account as soon as you move in.
  • Ask the neighbours for a plumber and an electrician; in Kroonstad, word of mouth works.
  • Join the town's Facebook groups for news and services.
  • Know your water and power plan for the days the town is without.

Where to live

Every suburb has its own character: Suidrand, Presidentia and Wilgenhof with their big stands, Kroonheuwel quiet and close to the schools, Kroonstad Central with townhouses near the shops. Perhaps rent for a few months before you buy, and drive through the streets you are considering on a Saturday morning and a Friday night.
