Morgen and hectares
Morgen, hectares and acres: what is this farm in each?
1. The area
2. The price (optional)
Assumptions used
- 1 morgen = 0,856 532 hectares and 1 acre = 0,404 686 hectares: the factors the law says "shall be used" for converting areas (Land Survey Regulations (GN R. 1130 of 1997, regulation 1, as substituted in 2001); read 2026-11-04).
- 1 square Cape rood = 14.2755 m² and 1 square Cape foot = 0.099136 m², from the Cape rood of 3,778 297 2 m and the Cape foot of 0,314 858 1 m (12 Cape feet to the rood, 600 square roods to the morgen) in the state's list: Chief Directorate: National Geo-spatial Information, Table 1 (PositionIT, April/May 2011); read 2026-11-04. The regulation itself names no Cape rood.
- 1 hectare = 10 000 m². Hectares are shown to 4 decimals, as a deed writes them.
- The "Geodetic Cape foot" of the same regulation (0,314 855 575 16 m) is for distances and co-ordinates, not for the area on a deed: it is not used here.
The answer
Enter the area in any unit: hectares, morgen as on an old title deed, acres or square metres.
How this works and the sources
What a farm's area is in hectares, morgen, acres and square metres. Old title deeds and Surveyor-General diagrams give the area in Cape morgen and square roods; a listing gives hectares. Type the area in the unit you have, with the square roods beside the morgen if the deed has them, and see it in every other unit, and the morgen as a deed writes it. Add a price for the whole farm or a price a hectare, morgen or acre, and see the price in each. The morgen and the acre are the factors the Land Survey Regulations prescribe for converting areas.
What this does not tell you
- This converts an area; it does not measure the land. The registered area on the title deed and the Surveyor-General diagram is the legal one, and a fence line or a listing can differ from it. Your conveyancer and a land surveyor confirm the extent.
- The morgen here is the Cape morgen of South African deeds (the Land Survey Regulations' figure). It is not the German, Dutch or other morgen, which are of other sizes.
- Square Cape roods and square Cape feet come from the state's list of the old units (Chief Directorate: National Geo-spatial Information), not from the regulation itself. Old Natal plans in English feet, perches or roods are not converted here.
- A price a hectare or a morgen is the asking or offered price shared over the area; it is not a valuation and it does not say what the land is worth.
- Nothing you enter is uploaded or kept by us; the share link carries the area, the unit and the price only, never a farm name or deed number.
