Carcass value
What is my animal worth at today's price?
1. Your animal
2. Its weight
3. Today's price
Assumptions used
- Carcass value = live weight x dressing % x the price per kg cold carcass; a carcass mass you type replaces live weight x dressing. A weaner or feeder lamb = live weight x the price per kg live. A group = one animal x the number.
- Dressing: KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Beef Production: The Basics, Useful Statistics (6. Carcass composition) (2016-02-18): young stock A1 50%, A2 53%, A3 to A5 54 to 56%; mature cows 48 to 49% lean, 53% fat. Feedlot cattle (KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Beef Production: The Basics, Feedlotting Cattle): 49% lean to 60% at a high finish. Read from the Internet Archive's copy: the Department's own site was under maintenance on 4 Nov 2026.
- No published South African dressing figure for beef AB and B or for any sheep class was found: you enter your own.
- Carcass prices are per kg cold carcass mass (KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Beef Production: The Basics, The Beef Carcass Classification System: cold mass is 2 to 3% below the mass straight after slaughter). The RPO's "2/3" columns are fat class 2 (lean) and 3 (medium).
- Weaner and feeder lamb prices are per kg live: Agri Market Trends (AMT), Weekly Livestock Report, 31 Oct 2025 labels them "Price (R/kg) - Live" (200 to 249 kg weaners, 24 to 32 kg lambs); the RPO's report names AMT as its weaner source.
- Prices: RPO (Red Meat Producers' Organisation), National Average Carcass Prices, weekly, published on Fridays. The field starts at the week ended 2026-10-23 (read by the site today); the site reads the RPO once a day and keeps the last checked week when a figure is missing, out of range or jumps more than 15%. AB has no RPO column. Checked against Standard Bank Livestock Biweekly Insights No. 20 of 2026-10-30. For this week's price see rpo.co.za/carcass-prices.
The answer
Enter the live weight, or the carcass mass from the abattoir slip.
How this works and the sources
What an animal brings at this week's price: a slaughter ox, cow or sheep by its class, from the live weight and the dressing percentage (or the carcass mass on the abattoir slip) at the price per kg cold carcass; a weaner calf or feeder lamb from its live weight at the price per kg live; and the same for the whole group. The price starts at the RPO's latest weekly national average for the class, with its week; type your buyer's price over it. The dressing percentage starts at the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Agriculture's published figure where one exists.
What this does not tell you
- This does not give your price. The RPO's weekly figures are national averages of the week before, shown with their week; for this week's price see the RPO (rpo.co.za/carcass-prices). Your abattoir, auction or buyer pays its own price, and the tool does not forecast it.
- The value is before commission, levies, transport, slaughter costs and any deductions for bruising, condemned parts or a lower class on the day.
- Dressing percentages are published in South Africa only for young cattle (A class) and mature cows; for beef AB and B and for every sheep class you enter your own figure or the carcass mass. Gut fill, finish and breed move it by several points.
- The weaner and feeder lamb averages are for weaners of 200 to 249 kg and feeder lambs of 24 to 32 kg; a lighter or heavier animal usually fetches a different price a kg. The RPO table has no AB class: type your own price for AB.
- Nothing you enter is uploaded or kept by us; a price you type is not even kept on your device, and the share link carries the figures only.
